LA ISLA BONITA

Formentera

It was in the summer of 2009 when we planned a trip to Ibiza’s little sister Formentera, located in the Western Mediterranean. Formentera is nothing more, nothing less than our favourite island getaway. There are many reasons to love this island: the seclusion, the never-ending crystal clear beaches, and the very special feel of the place. You can’t help but love this “cocktail” made of the scent of the sea, of the knotted pines, of the pastel colours and this unique summer spleen. It was not until very shortly before leaving that we’ve received a request from a Russian lifestyle magazine. “Make us a travel report, but something fancy” it said… You bet we had the photo equipment packed anyway.

It was the beginning of a brand new story… Formentera, Venice, the Canary Islands… and many more destinations to follow…

Issue December/February 2010

You never quite leave Formentera… you say goodbye… and you keep coming back…

The special fragrance of the island is in the wind. It is made of salt, pines, and thyme… it makes the midday heat so much more endurable…

On the left: a boneshaker is still the most authentic type of travel here… it’s tough, but all lamentation is gone once you think of all the shaping benefits!

On the right: watch out when exploring the salines! Beware of the old toothless watcher – he plays for keeps.

The imagery of the island is dominated by pastel colours… We love the turquoise-painted supermarket for the cocktails they serve… one for the road… two for the road…

The bar’s owner minds his daily siesta… while enjoying some really loud hard rock music…

On the left: Halfway down to the famous hippie market please stop by the legendary Blue Bar (they have got their own music label by now)… Enjoy the chill-out music and the blurry, steamy, flirty atmosphere it evokes… It will certainly let you buy more than you were heading to at the hippie market: arts and crafts will fill up your luggage alongside with batiks and pottery…

On the right: Ibiza Town… waiting for the flight has never been that beautiful. Known for its nightlife, the town surprises the traveller with its picturesque, tiny alleys. And the boutiques invite you to shop to your heart’s content. After hours of shopping every girl will think “Too bad we’re flying today. Why don’t we fly tomorrow? Why not the day after tomorrow?… Why not even later?“
