Venice

Venice in winter is a dream beyond compare… It’s so different than during any other season… the monochrome light that fuels Venice’ morbid elegance. The mystical feel of legendary movies like “Death in Venice” or “Don’t Look Now” immediately strikes you. For photographers it is a good idea to get up early… even though the crowds have melted now you’ll have to expect Japanese extras ☺

“Vsya Evropa” – March/April issue

Venice in winter… a monochrome symphony of infinite light and the ubiquitous “acqua alta”…

7 a.m…. time to sport your new wellies… the notorious high tide in Venice…floods the city all of a sudden… and goes out as suddenly… The lagoon lives to the rhythm of the tides. Venetians are used to cope with acqua alta. They can tell how and where to get home dry-shod…

The umbrella is your constant companion in the wintery Venice… And so is the rain. The unique ambience known from many works of the world’s literature exists because of this rain.

Over the rooftops of Venice… Overlook the famous Canale Grande from Campanile di San Marco, the town’s landmark – and daydream… In winter you’re almost alone here…

A labyrinthine maze of alleys and canals and small, charming bridges… will lead you astray… will captivate your heart and soul…

What is Venice without the gondolas… and the gondoliers… The gondoliers often inherit the family license… Seemingly, the Italian charm is passed from father to son as well… And could it be that the traffic safety in the canals is always at risk when they spot a beautiful woman?… Real Italians, that’s the way it is.

Last cappuccino before we depart… the most expensive in my life… here, at one of the world’s most famous places… Piazza San Marco, the heart of Venice… Napoleon, Mussolini, Goethe… These men are united in their admiration of the glory and the grandeur of this place, Venice’ heart since the 12th century… Toto Riina, the notorious mafia boss and most wanted fugitive at that time, is said to have been feeding pigeons and being photographed here with his newly-wed wife – never minding the arrest warrant…
